I took the baby out tonight to grab a bite of dinner
I set him up next to me
and he smiled
and burbled as I ate my dinner
and watched the crowd
I looked at all the different men around me
wondering
which of these men would my boy eventually be
the tall man with the bulging muscles towering over the rest
the man with dark eyes and a goatee - smiling at his coworkers -- slim and handsome and happy
lol -- the beatnik with the giant plugs in his ears.
will be be an athlete like my brother
or an intellectual
I stared at all the men around me
and marveled
that this tiny creature
will grow and grow and grow
and become one of them
one of these strange creatures we call men
Yessss - I totally get this. I feel like I'm looking at that in reverse lately, looking at my kids and thinking of the babies they were.
ReplyDeleteLove it.

And I can't really imagine it, but how interesting. Looking at your infant and knowing he will become ~ other. Funny.

It is a fascinating journey - at least so far. How amazing for you to see it for what it is at the outset. Enjoy.
ReplyDeleteoh, so sweet. I have them in several sizes now :)...and you know, you don't really notice that they are "almost men" until suddenly you can't reach something and they're right there to lend a hand...sans stepstool!
ReplyDeleteIt's an amazing transformation. (right now mine is undergoing a bit of a god complex... :)...)

boys to men...a long journey that is never what you expect
